The taste of Finnish Christmas
When in Helsinki, remember to taste Finnish Christmas delicacies. Many restaurants in Helsinki serve these season’s delicacies on their Christmas lunch buffets.
Glögi (Glühwein or mulled wine) is a traditional Christmas drink, usually made with red wine and various mulling spices. Glögi is usually served with raisins and blanched almonds. If red wine isn’t your thing, you can also ask for an alcohol free glögi or a stronger one made with, for example, vodka.
Enjoy your glögi with a Christmas pastry, joulutorttu. These delicious pastries are filled with plum jam and dusted with powdered sugar. As well as glögi, you can find these star-shaped delights in any café of the city. Or if you’re a fan of porridge, you should definitely try the traditional steaming rice porridge served with sugar and cinnamon on top.
The main dish on the Christmas menu is, of course, oven-baked ham. Most Finns could not imagine a Christmas dinner without ham, joulukinkku, accompanied with various vegetable casseroles, such as rutabaga, potato and carrot casseroles.
