My Helsinki _ Samu Haber

WHO?
Samu Haber is a lead vocalist of internationally well-known pop-rock band Sunrise Avenue. He established the band with his friend in 1992. Sunrise Avenue has released four studio albums selling more than 1 million copies worldwide, and is especially popular in central Europe. Haber has also performed as a judge in The Voice of Germany in 2013 and 2014.

What’s your relationship to Helsinki?

Helsinki is my hometown, and also the city where I grew up. So the relationship is pretty tight.

SAMU, YOUR FAVOURITE…

1. Restaurant?
All the restaurants of my friend, chef Tomi Björk: He is my food god idol.
2. Shop?
I like the shops around the Esplanade park area. There are malls and also smaller shops.
3. Bar/Club?
The best drink bar is definitely Liberty or Death. Also check out Mattolaituri and Skiffer in the summer when the nights are warm.
4. Venue in Helsinki to perform?
Helsinki Ice Hal
l, the home arena of the Helsinki IFK Ice Hockey team. The best arena in the world. To me.
5. Venue to see a gig?
I like to go to Tavastia or Circus. They’re a little smaller and it smells like rock and roll.

You have travelled around the world. How would you compare Helsinki to other cities in Europe?

What’s the best in Helsinki?

It’s one of the coolest and nicest cities in the world. Almost everyone who comes over is amazed by its beauty. It’s not too big, but big enough. It’s surrounded by the sea and lots of islands. I would recommend visiting Helsinki between May and September to anyone.

What’s your favorite Finnish band or artist?

Well, to me of course the people, like my real friends and my family of course. The restaurant / food scene is one of the best in the world, and especially in the summer time there are million things going on every day. It’s also very clean and safe everywhere unlike many other capitals in Europe.

Sunrise Avenue of course hahaha! Probably top three for me would be at the moment: Happoradio, Haloo Helsinki and Kasmir. All in Finnish, check them out.

What are you or Sunrise Avenue currently working with?

Now we’re touring our Best of Tour until September. Then we will see again. I’m also filming a new TV show Die Band in Barcelona.
